In 2021 I introduced and passed HB1212. As an Enhanced Concealed Carry Instructor I teach self defense law. After 6 years of teaching 130 year old 'bad' law, I wrote new self defense laws which now make you innocent until proven guilty by clear and convincing evidence. If you stay withing the law you are also immune from civil liability. In 130 years no one took this on, but I got it done. According to NRA, and stated nationally by the Governor, we now have the best self defense (stand your ground) law in the country.
In 2023 I introduced and passed HB1127 which secured a 5 million dollar grant for new personal protective equipment (bunker gear) for volunteer fire departments. The governors office sent BFM attorneys in to every committee hearing to kill the bill because it was above and beyond her budget. I DID NOT GIVE UP. The bill passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support and the grants have all been given out.
In 2018, As Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee I fought against a bill that would lower the education and training requirements for mental health professionals simply to increase the workforce. Lowering the standards for those working with the most severe mental health issues was a bad piece of legislation. That bill failed. The result was a better version of the bill the next year which we could all support.
These are accomplishments that not only take REAL experience, they take the building of relationships, the confidence in your expertise by fellow legislators and the trust of the industry.
